things that make music good? playing. playing anything, making a series of sounds and rythms with anything. or even just in your head. things that make music bad? fashion.

For me what makes music great, is my inability to tie down an all-encompassing definition of what it is that makes music great. You would have as many different interpretations of what makes music great, as the number of people you asked.
I love how everyone has a different viewpoint on music. Some people look for a specific attribute in a song and will steer clear of certain groupings - ie mainstream music - whereas others would be more, "If it sounds good, I like it."
This is my view on music as a whole rather than on individual pieces. I'll be sure to revisit and share my thoughts when it isn't 1.33am

For me personally, 'bad music' isn't down to it being commercial - i love Cher Lloyd and i love Black Flag. Two complete opposite ends of the spectrum. I think music becomes 'bad' when it's created without any heart in it - i recently co-filmed an interview with Michael from the Undertones, and one of his quotes sticks out 'don't write music thinking it's going to be a hit, and don't change it in any way so that other people with like it more'
I don't like people saying about how image and fashion takes away from music, if you're playing your heart and soul out night after night, then your image shouldn't take away from that - it only adds to your performance really

True. Luckily with the wonders of modern technology a band can sell their entire discography on bandcamp and possibly make as many millions as The Beatles and never play beyond the front room.
It seems to be a disillusion that bands have to be atleast a one hit wonder to obtain success. Look how many albums Sonic Youth have sold in their career from dismantling guitars
